The Hong Kong/Japan Working Holiday Scheme takes effect on 1 January 2010, providing an annual quota of 250 for each side. The Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong requires applicants to provide financial proof (of a bank deposit of about 200,000 Yen) for maintenance during their initial stay in Japan.

Successful applicants may be issued a Working Holiday Visa by the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong. During their 12-month stay in Japan, they can take up employment in order to supplement their travel funds and short-term courses.
